In the first half of 2023, the number of people who use phone services decreased by 2.71%. This is because MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria lost subscribers.
At the end of June, there were 219.76 million phone subscribers in Nigeria. This is 6.11 million fewer than in January, when there were 225.88 million subscribers.
MTN Nigeria lost 7.28 million subscribers in the first half of the year. This means that it had 84.66 million subscribers at the end of June, down from 91.95 million at the beginning of the year.
Airtel Nigeria also lost subscribers. It had 60.56 million subscribers at the beginning of the year, but only 60.19 million at the end of June. This means that it lost 373,035 subscribers in the first half of the year.
However, Globacom and 9mobile gained subscribers while MTN and Airtel were losing them. This is according to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Surprisingly, 9mobile recorded the highest growth in subscriber base. It gained 546,846 telephony users, which is a 4.19% increase.
9mobile’s total telephony subscriber base rose to 13.57 million during the review period, up from 13.03 million.
Globacom also contributed to the subscriber base. It reported that it had 61.33 million users at the end of June, compared to the 60.33 million subscribers it had in January. This shows that Glo’s base rose by 998,994 users.
